I wasn’t a “specialist” in any one thing, but over a decade working in Australia and New York, I’d picked up a stack of skills from client services, design, social media, websites, and more. I’d sat in the beige booths of an accounting firm, kept pace at an under-staffed PR agency, and hustled inside a fast-moving tech startup. What all of those roles had in common was this: I learned how to be adaptable, resourceful, and get things done.

For years, I thought being a generalist made me “less than.” But it turned out to be my superpower. Businesses didn’t just need specialists. They needed someone who could see the whole picture and make it happen. So, I pitched myself as a senior marketing manager for hire. The all-rounder they couldn’t afford to hire in-house. That’s how my journey with high-value clients began.

But being the go-to “yes girl” came at a cost. I was spread thin, reactive to clients’ demands, and constantly burnt out. I never knew what the week ahead would look like.

Everything changed when I hired my first VA. Together, we built streamlined processes, documented every step, and refined as we went. My business became a well-oiled machine, and my income stabilised at $15–20K months, all while working just 20 hours a week.
